DESCRIPTION:

The Rock of Guatape or Piedra del Peñol, is a monolith 220 meters high in Guatapé (Antioquia, Colombia) .1 The Rock of El Peñol, composed of quartz, feldspar and mica, was first climbed on July 16 1954 by an inhabitant of the area, Luis Eduardo Villegas López. In the company of Ramón Díaz and Pedro Nel Ramírez. Currently, it is possible to access its summit by climbing 740 steps built on the monolith.

Thus 300 years ago in 1714 was founded the Peñol in the site known as "Old Peñol", where it remained its urban center until 1978, when the transfer to the current location was made. In the main square stood a temple built by the same community of the mid-nineteenth century.

The Municipality of Guatapé Town has undergone different changes throughout history, since being essentially livestock, agricultural and mining, in the 1970s, given the construction of a gigantic reservoir in its territory, it became a tourist fortress. The Public Companies of Medellín built here in the 1970s a large hydroelectric complex with the flooding of 2262 hectares of land. This megaproject had great impacts on the social, economic, political, environmental and cultural in the locality.
