DESCRIPTION:

One and a half hour from Medellin, Santa Fe de Antioquia is a municipality of Colombia, located in the West subregion of Antioquia, department of which was its capital until April 17, 1826.

Santa Fe is a national monument because of its admirable and beautiful colonial architecture; Has 8 churches and a large number of houses from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

In recent years, there has been a notable growth in tourism, hotels, inns and condominiums; Nowadays abound everywhere. Events such as the film festival, added to the colonial architecture, the dry tropical climate, the abundant offer of fruits and many more attractions, have turned it into a tourist pole of first line.

The entire town itself is a place of interest. The architecture that has survived over the years, gives Santa Fe de Antioquia the appearance of a "stagnant" city of colonial times, so that the city itself was declared a National Monument.

The western bridge, named for being located in West Antioquia, is a Colombian suspension bridge that connects the municipalities of Olaya and Santa Fe de Antioquia, to the east and west of the Cauca River, respectively. At the time it was considered the seventh most important suspension bridge in the world.

Although today there are other suspension bridges in South America much longer, originally the West Bridge was the longest of the subcontinent of its kind, and that is where the historical and cultural importance of the bridge lies. Moment a key piece in the development of the region and the country.

The work is a faithful testimony to the extraordinary avant-garde vision of its designer, the engineer José María Villa, as well as the most advanced technical and scientific work of the time.1 It was declared National Monument of Colombia on November 26, 1978.2

José María Villa had civil engineering and mechanics as his professions. At age 14 he started college and was awarded 1,800 pesos to study in New Jersey; After completing his studies in the United States, participated in the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, on the East River. The western bridge was initially only opened for pedestrians, and later vehicles were allowed to pass.
